Since there is far more demand for transportation projects than there is money, working to manage traffic demand must be part of our overall transportation strategy. We created the six-county Commuter Services of South Central  Pennsylvania to provide free services to encourage commuting options, other than driving alone.

Commuter Services works with employers and commuters on a range of alternatives, offers a free emergency ride home program and online ride matching.

This joint effort for Dauphin, Lebanon. Lancaster, York, Cumberland and Perry counties is supported by chambers, metropolitan planning organizations and transit providers. The free services are underwritten primarily through federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) dollars.

There are more than 732,000 commuters in the six-county region. If we can reduce single occupancy vehicles during rush hours by just one percent, we will remove a 22-mile long line if traffic from our roadways. We all have a stake in ensuring that kind of success.

To help promote Commuter Services, we request these specific actions:

  • Link the www.PaCommuterServices.com web site to your municipal site(s).
  • Identify ways to help communicate these free services to employers and commuters in your municipality, such as newsletters.
  • Consider hosting or arranging a joint meeting of local employers with Commuter Services, so we can suggest options for meeting their specific needs.
  • Identify ways to include Commuter Services concepts into your planning process.
  • Read this letter at your next public meeting, and endorse Commuter Services as an important element in the the regional transportation strategy.

You, your employers and your residents can reach program director, Brandy Heilman, and the staff of Commuter Services at 1-866-579-RIDE or by visiting www.PaCommuterServices.com .
